Unless I'm sadly mistaken, the still above was from the original, silent version of The Lost World, with stop-motion effects by the great Willis O'Brien, who later went on to do King Kong!
Jon, That looks right to me. It's interesting to trace Willis O'Brien's development from this (1925) to King Kong (1933) to Mighty Joe Young (1949). Since The Lost World was silent, it was filmed at only 16fps (rather than sound film's 24fps) so the stop-motion seems a little less refined. I don't think it has anything to do with Obie's technique. Thanks!
