I don't think it's drugs. I think this story was some kind of metaphor:
"I am so full of rage at my thwarted ambitions and failure to achieve anything in life that I may explode...but if I can just be treated with a tiny bit of respect and appreciation by those around me, I'll be able to keep the lid on my simmering resentments instead of going on a destructive rampage."
See what I mean? It's a bit heavy for a kids book, hence the part about the chipmunk hotel.
