Dog of the Geek: Bimbo

Biography: Bimbo's career began in the silent film era at Fleischers. Eventually, a girlfriend was introduced, who was eventually transformed into Betty Boop! (Bimbo's original name in the cartoons was “Fritz”) Even after Betty was transformed to a human girl, Bimbo remained as her boyfriend despite being a dog. Eventually, Bimbo became just a pet to Betty.

Powers: None, other than standard cartoon character ability to take damage without being injured for long.

Group Affiliation: None

Miscellaneous: Bimbo only appeared in the Betty Boop cartoons from 1930 to 1933, after which he was ousted due to Production Code Censorship laws that protested that he promoted bestiality.

  1. And what's intresting, though maybe just my view of the matter, In the 1933 film 'Snow White' (the Betty Boop film, that is) Koko seams to be more the Boyfriend as Bimbo takes a fairly background role, and it is Koko that more 'saves the girl'.

  2. Bimbo was starring in cartoons wayyyyyyyyyyyyy before Betty Boop...she was introduced as his girlfriend, not the other way around. Bimbo's appearances date back to the silent Fleischers.

    There...I'm a dog geek and proud of it.

  4. Thanks for all your comments -- Jeff, I've updated the entry with your added information (which was, obviously, news to me! None of my reference materials mentioned Bimbo's existence prior to Betty Boop)!
