This and That Time, Friends!

Been a while since I posted an update...

ITEM! I suppose I should start this out by making a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the Random Acts of Geekery... between school and other stuff (which I'll write about below), I haven't been able to put any work in on this blog in way too long, so I've gone from being a few months ahead to not having quite finished this month's posts yet! And, since I want to think about developing some new features and reworking some things here, I've made the decision that starting June 1st, this blog will go into Low Content Mode, meaning that there'll only be one post each day, to give me time to get ahead again. When the Random Acts of Geekery returns to full content mode again (I'm shooting for September on that), there'll be some shaking up here, with some features you've been accustomed to on a particular day of the week moving, and other features changing their frequency. One of my goals is to make it so that there will be a nicer variety of things here. To help support my process, I'll be setting up a poll on the sidebar (if it's not up already by the time you see this) that will help me to find out from you, the readers, what features you like and what you don't like! I'll consider all input.

ITEM! This quarter at school -- my last quarter of full-time classes -- has been a real buttkicker! Usually by this time in a quarter, I've managed to get far ahead on homework for every class, but I'm currently running just on time (which I hate, as you might imagine). I'm really looking forward to the end of the quarter, and a nearly month-long break before summer quarter starts! That will comprise of my externship (where I'll be working for some doctor's office in the area, unpaid, and needing to get 180 hours in before the end of summer quarter) plus a class that will only meet three or four times during the summer.

ITEM! I should've mentioned this a few weeks ago, but we've had two foster children placed with us, making our total child count (with Tristan and Desi, our adopted kids) four! The new kids are six months and 21 months, siblings, and we have our work cut out for us with them! It's incredibly exhausting trying to keep up with two kids who need diapers changed, had to find a daycare for them, and we even traded in our Mazda 5 for a newer Kia Sedona because the Mazda didn't have enough room for us!

ITEM! Before the new kids arrived here, I'd done a bit of freelance transcription work, first doing some commentary track transcriptions for a few Roger Corman films from the 70s that'll be coming out on DVD, as well as a few others. More enjoyable (but lower paying, naturally) was the transcriptions I did for Andy Mangels' upcoming book about Filmation's Lou Scheimer! This has been a long-awaited biography, and I'm pleased to say that I've not only transcribed interviews for it, but Andy has also invited me to make comments and suggestions on what's been written so far, making me sort of an ad hoc editor, I suppose! My biggest suggestion concerns the preface of the book, but I won't give it away here. It's been just as fun reading each chapter as it's been written as it was to do the transcriptions! Sadly, with the new kids, I don't see that I'll be able to do any more in the future!

ITEM! A while back, you may recall my implying (or outright promising) a new View-Master blog in my future. As you can imagine, I've been too busy to make that a reality! Well, that and the fact that I haven't been able to purchase the needed scanner with transparency adapter so I don't have to rely on my brother's ability to do any scans when he has the time means that it likely won't come to pass any time soon. In fact, what I've been considering is making the View-Master videos (whenever I get around to starting them) a new feature here... but don't hold your breath waiting on that! If I had to guess, I'd say it could likely be January before those start up! On the other hand, there may be a few last gasps on the Give-A-Show blog coming up...

  1. Wow - That is one busy life! Good luck with ALL the kids and don't worry about the blog so much.

  2. The sidebar poll says "you have to be signed in to vote" but doesn't say where or how or what sort of signing in is required.

Also, best wishes with the new members of your household!

  3. I think if you're signed in for posting comments, you're signed in for the poll. It's probably a feature to prevent people from skewing the results with anonymous answers.

Anyone who doesn't want to deal with the poll can always post their responses in a comment, by the way!

  4. That's what I originally assumed as well...but it can't be that, because I'm signed in to post this comment (as I was for the previous comment) and the "Vote" button is grayed out and the above-mentioned message appears below it. If I find what's causing this I'll send an update...

(Anyway, I'd vote for Cool Stuff as my favorite feature and Random Videos of Geekery as least favorite, only because many other bloggers do videos but no one else does Cool Stuff as cool as yours.)

  5. Thanks, Richard.... Random Videos of Geekery will be going away, although there will be videos with some of the new features that will be coming up! There's not been much response to the polls, so they'll probably come down soon.
