Kirby Kovers!

First up this time around is Tales of Suspense #24, with the Insect Man! This is a very cool design, if you ask me -- maybe could've used a little more variation in the coloring, but still a nicely effective monster!

Next, it's Tales to Astonish #43, featuring Ant-Man! This is a really great cover to get your attention, and obviously it was memorable, because the same concept and layout was copied for a 1980s (or was it early 1990s?) Captain America cover!

Next, Adventure Comics #101, and you can always count on the Sandman covers to be something a bit out of the ordinary -- although this one seems to have more Simon than Kirby in it -- what do you think?

I don't know how Kirby felt about covers with a lot of characters in them, but it seems that he was always up to the challenge! Five X-Men, five Evil Mutants, and yet things don't look that crowded! Sure, it would make sense to have Cyclops firing his eyebeams, but it would've gotten in the way of the composition. Note how the eye is drawn through the scene via the characters -- you can't help but either start looking from the Angel and then over and up, or start from Cyclops.
