Comic Book Ads: Marketing the Marvels!

With the popularity of Captain Marvel, followed shortly by Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel, it only made sense that the Marvels would be marketed... and marketed they were!

There were a number of toys featuring the Marvels, especially paper toys! Here's one of several Picture Puzzles produced!

The Captain Marvel Club was heavily promoted, especially during the classic "Monster Society of Evil" serial, in which messages in Captain Marvel Code were shown at the end of each chapter. Of course, to solve the code, one needed to join the club!

Subscriptions were hawked as a Christmas present idea... and what a great present it would have been!

Seeing ads like these make me wonder if Fawcett's creation of Mary Marvel wasn't so much planned to sell comics, but to use as a venue for selling these dresses!
