Ape of the Geek: Beppo the Super-Monkey!

Species: Kryptonian monkey

First Appearance: Superboy #76

Other Appearances: Other issues of Superboy, and likely issues of Adventure Comics that featured the Legion of Super-Pets.

Merchandising: A DC Direct soft toy, as well as appearances in the Super Pets kids' book line.

Biography: Beppo was one of Jor-El's test animals on Krypton. He was a stowaway on Kal-El's rocket ship, leaving it before Kal was discovered by the Kents. For some years, he lived in a jungle (location unspecified, but presumably in Africa) where his super-powers allowed him to live comfortably. One day, Beppo used his telescopic vision to spot Kal-El, at this point a toddler in Smallville, and flew there, quickly causing trouble. An accidental setting off of fireworks startled Beppo, causing him to flee into space. He later returned to Earth when Kal-El was a teenaged Superboy, and even later met Supergirl as well as Krypto the Superdog and Streaky the Supercat. This meeting led to him becoming a charter member of the Legion of Super-Pets, along with Krypto, Streaky, Comet the Superhorse, and Proty. Beppo was erased from continuity as a result of Crisis on Infinite Earths, although he has reappeared at least twice in continuity since then.

Powers: Beppo has all of the super-powers Kryptonian beings gain under a yellow sun, including super-strength, invulnerability, flight, super-vision, telescopic and microscopic vision, heat vision, super-hearing, and more.

Miscellaneous: Some consider Beppo to be one of the more ridiculous concepts in Kryptonian survivors... and I can understand that, although it's more likely that Krypton would have ape-like creatures for the humanoid population to evolve from than it is for Krypton to have dogs like Krypto!
