Cool Stuff Week, Day 4: Popeye Stuff and More!
The first item on today's Cool Stuff post is this poster for the Phantom movie serial! More after the jump!
The Phantom Planet still! Anyone ever see this movie?
Here's probably the oldest 8mm home movie photo I've collected in my library.... Based on the cover art, I'm guessing each of these had two cartoons, a Betty Boop and a Popeye, probably both of them a bit truncated from the originals, with subtitles or dialogue cards inserted, as sound home movies were fairly rare back then!
This Popeye activity book mentions Popeye cartoons on TV, what is difficult to tell is which Popeye cartoons they're talking about! The cover shows the classic character designs, but as you'll see, the interiors use the Famous Studios redesigns of the characters, where nobody had just dots for eyes.
This back cover cut-out scene doesn't look too exciting, does it?
Looks like this ad for Popeye products is from the same time period as the activity book.
Here's an interesting mix of Popeye products! Most of 'em look pretty fun. I actually have that Bluto plush figure in my own collection, but haven't ever seen those three story books in person!
Obviously, the packaging for this Popeye ball and paddle wasn't done by the same person who did the art on the paddle! That's some really bad artwork!
Here's a pair of really cool vintage Popeye banks!
Here's an interesting item... despite the bad artwork on it! As you can see, this beach ball pictures the Popeye family of characters... including Poopdeck Pappy, who's not on a lot of licensed stuff!
Popeye bendy! Man, they really stretched the poor guy out, didn't they?
Popeye bingo game!
Popeye bookmark with Bluto!
This Popeye record may predate the Power Records book and record sets. As you can see, the art isn't quite on-model!
Popeye bubble pipes, probably one of the most on-target Popeye toys produced!
Popeye belt buckle!
Cafe Popeye menus!
Popeye figural cake pan!
Popeye card game! I don't know who the "Lucy Brown" character is, I don't recall seeing her in the old "Thimble Theater" strips I've read.
Here's a different card game of sorts... well, the seller called it a card game, I suspect it's more trading cards.
Before Rock'em Sock'em Robots, there was this Popeye the Champ boxing toy!
Here's some more toys based on the Famous Studios version of Popeye:
TV Club pin!
Three different sets of Colorforms toys!
Popeye color reader!
Comic Picture Puzzles!
Corgi Popeye Figures!
Popeye Halloween costumes!
Popeye Cowboy guns!
Popeye figural decorations!
Popeye Draw and Color Book!
Popeye Farm Friends! Wow, once this is out of the package, it has nothing to do with the Sailor Man, does it?
And we wrap up this edition with this assortment of Popeye figurines!
More Popeye stuff tomorrow!
