Found on eBay: Batman Stuff!

And here we are again with another edition of "Found on eBay," the recurring feature of this blog in which I, ye humble blogger, share photos with you of items that have been offered for sale on eBay. As with all other posts in this series, I'm not promising that any of these items are still available, and if they are, I make no promises about the sellers.

Now, let's get on to some cool Batman stuff!

batman_1966mug

Check out this 1966 Batman insulated mug! Looks like Carmine Infantino artwork on the Dynamic Duo, but it appears that a Golden Age logo has been used!

batman_60swatch

That's a nice-looking Batman watch from the 1960s there... too bad the bat-emblem got covered up, though!

batman_66coinbank

This Batman coin bank has a 1966 copyright date on it. There have been a fair amount of different Batman banks produced over the years!

batman_66pin

Here's a reversal on the mug art/logo dichotomy: This card for the Batman pin uses a then-modern 1966 Batman logo, but the figure art is definitely Golden Age (with the circle added around the bat-emblem). So far as the pin goes, it bears a resemblance to the bat-logo on the doors of the 1966 Batmobile... but I can't imagine why someone would've paid the licensing fee to manufacture this when they might've gotten away with just calling it a bat pin!

batman_adamwesthanis.JPG

This Batman figure, which looks just like Adam West playing Batman, was a foreign-produced figure, and is probably a bootleg, to boot!

batman_ahibatcopter

Here's another of those AHI 1970s items, and I wish I had a better photo of it, too. If I recall, this Bat-Copter toy had some kind of spring-loaded system, so that you'd pull a string to uncoil the spring, and then it would wind back, spinning the propeller so the Bat-Copter could fly!

batman_ahibatcyclemoc

Ah, and here's an AHI Bat-Cycle that uses that same zip-cord gyro "technology" I was writing about earlier today with Kenner's SSP cars!

batman_ahijapanbmobile

AHI also produced several Batmobiles, and this one was battery-powered. Note the Golden Age-styled artwork on the box.

Now, those AHI Batman items are all pretty cool, and all make sense... but check this out:

batman_ahilantern.JPG

Yes, it's a Batman Lantern! Just the thing for that camping trip (although I suppose I shouldn't talk, because I just remembered that I own a 1970s DC superheroes sleeping bag, and this lantern would make a nice accessory with it).

batman_ahisspbatmobile

This is another AHI Batmobile, and it also is gyro-powered! You can even see the gyro pretty well in this photo.

batman_aurorabatcycle.JPG

Yes, it's the Aurora Batcycle kit! And I don't even want to think what this closed for...

batman_batarangbagatelle.JPG

You don't see too many head-to-head Batman games (or any other superhero games, for that matter)... but here's one, the "Baterang Bagatelle" game! I guess you can probably figure out how it's played for yourself.

batman_batboat_corgiloose

Hadn't had a Batboat yet in this entry of Bat-toys... so here's the Corgi one...

batman_batboatpooltoy

...and here's an inflatable one for your pool!

More Bat-toys in the next edition of... "Found on eBay"!

Comics Advertising: Charlton Oct '76, DC Jan '76

charlton_10_76_1

This was the only ad of interest from Charlton's October 1976 comics... and it's almost too cool to be from a Charlton comic, eh? If you ask me, those monster iron-ons are just the absolutely best thing I've ever seen advertised in a Charlton book, bar none!

Can you imagine how much a set of those would go for on eBay these days?

dc_01_76_1

Now, on to a few ads from DC's January 1976 cover-dated books, like the above ad for Kenner's Six Million Dollar Man action figure! And it reminds me of two things:

1. That I really need to get to some of the Six Million Dollar Man photos in the "Found on eBay" collection...

2. This story about the Six Million Dollar Man action figure from my childhood.

My family -- especially my siblings and I -- were huge fans of the Six Million Dollar Man, and when Kenner came out with this action figure, my brother Jeff absolutely had to have one. And I'm pretty sure that he got one for his birthday that year. I don't think he even had to unwrap a package, because it was purchased at Kmart for him while we were all there!

So, we get home, and he opens up the box and pulls the thing out... looks through the "bionic eye", that's cool... but then he puts the engine block on Steve's hand and starts pressing the button on the back...

...and nothing happens. His arm doesn't move at all.

He tells our mother, and the whole thing goes back in the box, and back to Kmart for an exchange.

While they're out... I find the instruction sheet that was in the box, but fell out and onto the floor when Jeff pulled Steve out of the box. The sheet that tells you that in order to make Steve Austin lift the engine block, you have to turn Steve's head to one side.

Naturally, when Jeff and mom got back from Kmart with the replacement for the "defective" toy, I had to point that out to them. And just as naturally, when following the directions, it worked perfectly.

I don't think Jeff got any more of the Six Million Dollar Man items, though.

dc_01_76_2

The second ad from the January '76 DC books is another Kenner ad, for the TTP toys that, as I recall, pretty much flopped. TTP, as you might be able to read, stands for "Turbo Tower of Power." These motorcycles kind of worked like Ideal's Evel Knievel motorcycle toy, in that you'd put the motorcycle on the tower/ramp, and then crank the thing up, and when you stopped, the motorcycle would go.

This was kind of the follow-up to Kenner's more successful SSP car line, which used a gyroscopic "motor" that you activated with a T-strip which had teeth (something that was also copied by AHI for at least one line of motorcycle toys) which engaged the gears of the single real wheel in the center of the toy.

dc_01_76_3

Speaking of Evel Knievel, here's a back cover ad for that Ideal line, which is another toy line I have lots of pics to share with you guys as soon as I get to 'em!

Brother Jeff also had the Evel Knievel figure with motorcycle, but had no problem making it work right.

Found on eBay! Movie Posters and Models!

atcircuslc1.JPG

As I said, I'm a huge fan of the Marx Brothers, and so there's some Marx items appearing in the "Found on eBay" posts here and there!

I think I've only seen "At the Circus" just once, and it was so long ago I barely remember more of it than Groucho singing "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." I should really rectify that one of these days!

atcircuslcp.JPG

This reminds me of one of the stories about the making of "At the Circus" that I've read. It seems that the gorilla costume that was used at the beginning of filming wasn't the same costume used at the end of filming! You see, back when At the Circus was filmed, gorilla portrayers apparently didn't own their own gorilla costumes! The studios had to hire them separately. So the actor playing the gorilla wasn't happy with the gorilla suit the studio rented for him, since that suit had no ventilation in it. After one particularly hot, sweaty day, the actor took an ice pick and made ventilation holes in the gorilla suit!

Well, when the owner of said suit found out, he hit the roof, and refused to let them use the gorilla suit again.

Rather than scrap the entire movie, the studio decided to rent an orangutang costume (apparently there were no gorilla costumes available), figuring audiences would never notice the difference!

atommanvssupermanlc8.JPG

This lobby card is from the second Superman serial starring Kirk Allyn... and one I've never seen!

aurora_comicscene_hulk.jpg

When Aurora decided to reissue their 1960s comic book model kits in the 1970s, they also decided to get all-new art done by the current comic creators... hence, Herb Trimpe had the honors for the Hulk box art, as well as the comic accompanying the instruction booklet!

I used to have this version of the Hulk kit!

aurora_comicscenes_cap.JPG

Here's the Captain America box art from the same series release, and I'm guessing that's John Romita, Sr. doing the art duties here!

Too bad they didn't get Kirby to do the artwork... that would've been truly awesome.

aurora_comicscenes_spidey.jpg

I think Jazzy Johnny did the art for the Spidey box art, too!

aurora_landofgiantsship

Jumping back in time with the Aurora kits, here's the Spindrift from Land of the Giants, my favorite Irwin Allen TV series, bar none. (If you're curious, Time Tunnel is my second favorite... and wouldn't an Aurora kit of the Time Tunnel complex have been cool as heck?)

aurora_voyageflyingsub

Flying Sub above... you know, I don't know how long I convinced myself that the Spindrift and Flying Sub were the same vehicle, painted differently!

aurora_penguinmodel

I always wondered why Aurora did a Penguin model kit... did any other Batman villains get made into model kits? I would've thought that Joker and Catwoman kits would've sold better.

aurora_prehis_cavebear

I'm pretty sure that in the 1970s, most of the money I spent on model kits went into Aurora's coffers... and what they didn't get, MPC did! The Prehistoric Scenes were one of my favorite series, after the monster and superhero ones, naturally! I never had the Cave Bear one...

aurora_voyagermodel

I had no idea that this kit had been made! The Voyager is from Fantastic Voyage. No, not the movie. The Filmation animated series!

aurora_ww

I've got to imagine that the Wonder Woman kit was probably the poorest-selling Aurora comics-based model kit... it was never even reissued in the 70s, so far as I know!

Next up in "Found on eBay" -- more Batman collectibles!

This post isn't much of a bonus, though... since there's only two "strange transformation" covers left in the queue for me to post!

Ads from Marvel Comics Gallery!

From November, 1977!

I love these Superhero Merchandise/Heroes World ads... just checking out all this merchandise being offered, and now especially hoping to find someone selling these items on eBay so I can snag a pic for future "Found on eBay" posts! Haven't seen anyone selling those wrist radios so far!

Pizzazz was Marvel's answer to "Dynamite Magazine" from Scholastic and "Kids Magazine," which was created by kids and for kids. By all rights, Pizzazz should've been a huge hit, because it featured Marvel characters, Star Wars (which Marvel had the rights to), and more... and it was promoted pretty heavily, too! But apparently it flopped bigtime.

From September, 1976:

I just saw a copy of this record at last weekend's Portland Comic Book Show, among many, many other comics-related records (I was tempted to purchase quite a few of 'em, even though I don't have a turntable).

From July, 1977:

Yes, I have posted Sky Heroes ads before. Yes, I will probably do so again. And finally, yes, I do have a pic for a future "Found on eBay" post of one of these things!

I have photos of some of those patches coming up for "Found on eBay" posts, too!
