Halloween Countdown: Original Horror Comic Art!

Time for another look at some original comic art from horror and monster comics!

alarmingtales05_cov_severin

First up is John Severin's cover for Alarming Tales #5! Looks to have a bit of a Wally Wood influence, doesn't it?

alarmingtalesunk_01_kirby.jpg

The seller of this Jack Kirby page claimed it was from an issue of Alarming Tales, but it says "Unearthly" on the art itself... anyone know for sure where it came from?

astonishing22_01_ayers.jpg

Well, perhaps he wasn't a monster per se, but It! The Living Colossus certainly fits in the mold of other giant creatures! Here's page 1 from Astonishing Tales #22, by Dick Ayers!

blackcat37_cov_kremer.jpg

Here's Warren Kremer's very moody cover for Black Cat Mystery #37!

blackcat40_cov_simon.jpg

From issue #40, here's Joe Simon's cover!

blackcat57_cov_kirby

Jack Kirby's cover to issue #57 looks like it inspired a later DC sci-fi comics cover, eh?

blackcat59_cov_kirby

Kirby also did the cover to the slightly-retitled #59!

blackcat60_cov_kirby.jpg

The seller of the cover for Black Cat #60 claimed it was by Kirby, and the GCD agrees, adding it's Joe Simon inks... so who am I to judge?

blackmagic12_pg_meskin.jpg

Next, we have a page from Black Magic #12, by Mort Meskin, showing a very strong Simon-Kirby influence!

blackmagic_unpubcov_kirby.jpg

Here's an unpublished Kirby cover for Black Magic!

boriskarloff18_cov_wilson

Next up, it's the painted cover to Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery #18, by George Wilson!

chamberchills07_cov_avison

And here's the cover to Chamber of Chills #7, by Al Avison!

chamberchills11_cov_elias.jpg

Issue #11's cover, by Lee Elias!

chamberchills14_cov_elias.jpg

Elias also did issue #14's cover!

chamberofchills10__rudypalais

Here's an unknown page from Chamber of Chills #10, by Rudy Palais!

chamberofchills10_cov_elias.jpg

And here's Elias' cover for that same issue!

chamberofchills17_cov_elias.jpg

Issue #17's cover, also Elias!

More Chamber of Chills to start us off next time!

More monstery goodness on Monday's regular installment!

Cool Stuff!

This edition of Cool Stuff begins with items from Beneath the Planet of the Apes! You may have seen these already if you've been a long-time reader of the Random Acts of Geekery.

Here's the Italian poster for the movie, and I like it! Below, some Mexican lobby cards:

beneathpota_pressbook

This mock newspaper was one of the ways the movie was promoted... I'd love to get my hands on all of these!

beneathpota_pressbook2

Here's the actual pressbook cover. You don't see these for movies since print went all digital, one of the unfortunate effects of desktop publishing.

bravestar_neutralaser.jpg

Here we have the Neutralaser from Filmation's Bravestarr cartoon! I don't believe I ever watched this show when it was on, but I did work on the special features for the DVD (transcribing interviews). Still haven't watched it, though!

Below, some of the 12" Megos based on TV's Buck Rogers! I used to have the Buck figure when I was collecting Megos.

buckrogers_8mm.jpg

Here's the box for the 8mm home movie, probably based on the pilot episode. This could well have been one of the last 8mm home releases, as video was starting to make its way into the public consciousness!

buckrogers_utilitybelt

Been a long time since I've watch the show, but the communicators on this utility belt don't ring a bell to me... anyone remember if these resembled anything from the show?

Here's the smaller figures Mego put out, in the same scale as Kenner's Star Wars line:

No way could any action figure come close to the hotness that was Erin Gray in Buck Rogers, eh?

Next time: Captain America Serial Mexican Lobby Cards and more!
